Greer Melidonis, Psy.D.

Welcome to this website. Perhaps you are here because you are searching to find answers, solutions or directions to manage whatever has been bothering you or to change something in your life. You may also wonder whether and how I would be able to help and what approach I may take?

My approach to therapy is to talk with you in ways that open space for the discovery and exploration of possible solutions; in a collaborative participatory process. Being with you as a client is a privilege; listening to you describe relationships with partners, families, friends, schools, colleges and workplaces; understanding your views on what and how you would like to see change; and sharing these with whoever you choose to involve and myself. I can also draw on my own life journey that offers me a rich background of experience with travels to so many places and through so many differing perspectives, as may be appropriate to your situation.

I obtained a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa in 1973; a Doctor in Psychology Degree from the Graduate School of Applied Psychology, Rutgers–the State University of New Jersey; an internship in Clinical/Community Psychology at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 1993 and my license to practice psychology in NJ in 1995. My initial training was as a General Nurse at the Johannesburg General hospital in 1966. I have undertaken advanced training in solution focused and narrative approaches at the Brief Family Therapy Center in Milwaukee and at Dulwich Center in Australia. I obtained a Specialist Certificate in Cyberculture by the Online Therapy Institute in 2016. My most recent trainings were in parenting and grief counseling.

With more than thirty years of practice with children, adolescents, families and adults in South Africa, Greece, Australia and America, I continue to see benefit in collaborative therapeutic conversations that open us to possibilities for the discovery of joy, fun and celebration in our lives. There is however always room for new learning, Currently, I am encountering oppressive situations, where sometimes it feels like nothing can be overcome or changed and where so many more people who have to cope with loss and suffering. Buddhist teachings with skills such as breathing and meditation are helpful and I continue to explore options and ways to cope with my clients. Telehealth has brought the advantage of meeting families in their living rooms and even pets contribute to the creation of new meanings and ways to live a fuller life.
