Jennifer Fatzler, MA, LMFT

Welcome.  I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 20 years of experience helping people address their mental health needs and to improve the quality of their lives and their relationships.  I am educated and trained in both psychodynamic and family systems therapy, and I have clinical experience in a number of areas including individual private practice, psychiatric hospitalization, children and family services, behavioral health managed care systems, clinical quality assurance, and drug court services.

About my approach:  We all have certain patterns of relating to the world and to others which contain our strengths, individuality, intelligence, and creativity; and also our individual coping mechanisms.  These patterns of relating and ways of coping have usually developed in early childhood enabling us to function in our environments and  protecting us from the usual stressors of childhood, as well as from individual painful circumstances.  Usually the coping mechanisms have done their job – protected us and kept us whole.   However, later in life, some of these patterns of relating and ways of coping may no longer be effective and, in fact, can cause more pain and dysfunction than the original stressor.  This might be part of an ongoing pattern or triggered by a change or a stressful event such as a divorce, career transition, or a sick family member.  Environmental factors such as our country’s political climate or the stress of a high paced world can also affect our coping mechanisms greatly.   When our ways of relating or coping are unhealthy, this is usually expressed as some kind of symptom such as anxiety, depression, poor self-esteem, feelings of guilt or anger, impulsive behavior; or can cause relationship problems, repetition of unhealthy relationships, or problems at work.   I use a psychodynamic approach to guide you in exploring these symptoms, patterns of relating, and coping mechanisms and together, we become aware or conscious of them and the underlying feelings associated with them.  Once understood and expressed, you can then consider the opportunities for change and make room for healthier ways of coping and interacting with others. I believe that real change can happen when you and I work collaboratively, empowering you to make choices that are right for you.  When indicated, I incorporate mindfulness and cognitive behavioral techniques to help you manage any psychological symptoms that are causing you distress.

I offer a safe setting in which to do all therapeutic work, without judgement, and with respect to individual lifestyles, choices, and values.

I am currently offering individual psychodynamic psychotherapy to adult clients via an online platform.  Sessions are generally 50 minutes on a regular weekly basis.
