Dr. Judith Turian, PhD

Let me walk with you and help you discover a path to greater self-understanding and contentment, break the patterns that undermine your success and learn to see your world through a new pair of glasses.

Wherever you are on your life journey, it is important to have companionship as you travel. Sometimes your fellow traveler will be your life partner, your church or community fellowship or a good and trustworthy friend. This may be a time that you need the ear of a dedicated and trained listener to help you find new understanding or different ways of approaching and navigating your interior emotional landscape or your external surroundings. Let me walk with you and help you discover a path to greater self-understanding and contentment, breaking the patterns that undermine your success as you learn to see your world through a new pair of glasses.

Psychotherapy/Counseling

As a psychologist, I am trained in the diagnosis and treatment of habits of thinking or behaving that cause emotional distress.

You might be emotionally affected by current life stressors such as problems at work, difficulties in your relationship or death of a loved one.

You might have experienced trauma in the past which is affecting your ability to cope today.

Perhaps you have a habit of worrying or you have panic attacks which interfere with your day-to-day functioning.

Maybe you struggle with depression and find it difficult to get the energy to get anything done or to see anything in a positive light.

You might be having difficulty stopping drinking or using drugs. You might be able to stop but find that you can’t stay stopped! Or you feel overwhelmingly responsible for a parent, partner or child who is addicted and feel guilty that you haven’t been able to fix the person you love.

These are the situations, experiences or problems that I can treat, providing help and support with counseling.

Coaching

As a coach, I will assist you in achieving goals or addressing blocks to success in your current life endeavors.  Coaching is action-based with homework assignments, setting of intentions and achieving specific desired outcomes that will result in greater life fulfillment.  Results are important.

Perhaps you are in recovery from addiction but having difficulty with completing the steps.

You want a close and trusting relationship with God or the Divine, but you are finding this to be difficult.  You might be struggling with your spiritual or religious beliefs due to negative past experiences with a religious leader or community or because you feel let down by God or your higher power.

You want to be financially independent but you are having difficulty managing your money.

You want to communicate better with your life partner or deal more successfully with your difficult teen.

You want to complete a project but keep getting stuck.

You want to contribute more fully to social justice, environmental or political causes.

You just want to have a more hopeful and positive attitude about the world around you. I will encourage you and partner with you while you more fully become the person you know you are.

Though I would love to be able to provide psychotherapy services to individuals everywhere, CA state licensing laws restrict psychologists from treating people who are residing or even traveling outside the state of California.

About Me

I am a clinical psychologist (PhD) licensed in the state of California, and I have been in private practice since 1992. Prior to that, I served on active duty in the US Navy as a psychologist and clinical director of the Alcoholic Rehabilitation Service at the Naval Hospital in Long Beach, CA. I am a certified Spiritual Director, and I am the author of God: A Relationship Guide, a memoir and how-to book for developing a spiritual life.

As an active member of a 12-Step fellowship, I set about finding a God of my own understanding. I grew up in a secular Jewish family, but I was always attracted toward deeper faith. I love the traditions I learned as a child, but I chose to become Christian as an adult. Through the years in clinical practice, my clients have helped me understand many different religious and spiritual paths. It has been a great joy and honor to help each one to find and follow their most authentic spiritual path. I am currently the lay leader of the Educational Program at the United Church of Christ, an open and affirming, social justice-oriented church community.

It is my life experience and ongoing personal journey, seeking to know myself and my world, that informs my book learning. I believe strongly in social justice and the basic goodness of each person. It is this that I believe suits me to be of greatest service to those who come to me for help. I look forward to meeting you and walking with you on your path to discovery and recovery, leading to belief in yourself and greater success in your life endeavors.
